How to Stimulate an 11-Month-Old's Physical Development

Although some 11-month-old babies have mastered walking, most get by with crawling or supporting themselves on furniture. Your baby has probably also gotten good at dropping and throwing objects - all skills he needs to practice to master. Help him learn. (The following information has been adapted from Dr. Segal's book series, "Your Child at Play.")

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Ribbons
  • Rubber Duckies
  • Strollers
  • Cheerios
  • Combs
  • Ladles
  • Paper Cups
  • Strainers
  • Infant Soft Dolls

Step1
Have him push his stroller if he's walking. This will help him balance and give him practice with starting and stopping.
Step2
Encourage him to walk on different surfaces if he's walking. Try taking steps barefoot on the carpet or floor, or take him to the beach and let him feel the sand under his feet.
Step3
Play "follow the leader" using simple gestures or motions. He'll get exercise and also learn to follow along.
Step4
Give him two paper cups and pieces of O-shaped cereal. Show him how to pour them back and forth.
Step5
Give him a comb and a baby doll. See if he can comb the doll's hair.
Step6
Tie a ribbon onto one of his toys. Let him watch while you hide it under the sofa. See if he will use the ribbon to pull the toy back out.
Step7
Give him a strainer or a ladle in the bath. See if he tries to catch his rubber ducks.

Tips & Warnings

  • Let your baby be your guide when selecting activities: What new skills is he working on? What sorts of toys engage his attention? What makes him smile?
  • If a particular activity seems stressful or frustrating, stop and give it a try another day.
  • Remember that all babies develop at different speeds, usually with spurts and plateaus.
  • Consult with your pediatrician if you have any concerns about your child's development.
