How to Stimulate a 9-Month-Old's Physical Development

By nine months, most babies have a well-developed style of moving about. They'll be working on standing, cruising, climbing up stairs or sliding off sofas. Find ways to help your baby grow, whatever his stage. (The following information has been adapted from Dr. Segal's book series, "Your Child at Play.")

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Baby Blankets
  • Baby Hooded Towels
  • Balls For Toddlers
  • Brooms
  • Towels

Step1
Practice sitting down, if your baby is able to pull himself up but can't figure out how to get down. Let him hold on to a towel or broom handle while you ease him back down to sitting.
Step2
Play a hand-clapping game. Clap his hands together and then hide them under a blanket. He'll love watching his hands go away and come back.
Step3
Roll a soft fabric ball back and forth with your baby. Let the rest of the family join the game.
Step4
Play catch-a-baby when diapering: As he tries to escape, catch his legs and pull him back. Doing this several times will tire him long enough for you to change him.
Step5
Give your baby his own towel after his bath. Encourage him to try drying himself.
Step6
Exercise in the bath: Say "kick kick" in rhythm with his feet. When he stops kicking, stop calling "kick kick." This is a fun game of stop and go while he strengthens his legs.

Tips & Warnings

  • Let your baby be your guide when selecting activities: What new skills is he working on? What sorts of toys engage his attention? What makes him smile?
  • If a particular activity seems stressful or frustrating, stop and give it a try another day.
  • Remember that all babies develop at different speeds, usually with spurts and plateaus.
  • Consult with your pediatrician if you have any concerns about your baby's development.
