How to Stimulate a 6-Month-Old's Physical Development

At six months, your baby has learned to sit up by herself. Her ability to reach and grasp is also becoming ever more precise. Help her build on her quickly growing skills. (The following information has been adapted from Dr. Segal's book series, "Your Child at Play.")

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Balls For Toddlers
  • Bananas
  • Crackers

Step1
Give her a ride on your shoulders, holding her thighs firmly with both hands. Riding high will help her develop balance and control, and will also give her a chance to look at the world from a different perspective.
Step2
Develop her crawling skills by putting her on the floor. If she doesn't like to be there alone, get down and play with her.
Step3
Make a simple obstacle course on the floor out of different textured pillows. This will help her develop her crawling coordination.
Step4
Play ball: Sit across from your baby as she sits in another adult's lap. Roll a ball back and forth.
Step5
Give her two pie pans. Show her how to bang them together or bang them on a table.
Step6
Help her develop finger dexterity by giving her small bits of food to pick up at mealtime. Start with slices of banana or bits of unsalted crackers.

Tips & Warnings

  • Let your baby be your guide when selecting activities: What new skills is she working on? What sorts of toys engage her attention? What makes her smile?
  • If a particular activity seems stressful or frustrating, stop and give it a try another day.
  • Remember that all babies develop at different speeds, usually with spurts and plateaus.
  • Consult your pediatrician if you have any concerns about your baby's development.
