    Instructions

      • 1

Prepare for preseason training. This two-week period can be torture for the unprepared player - or it can be manageable for the physically fit one.

      • 2

Enter freshman year in good shape. A player who does this is in the minority and has a tremendous advantage.

      • 3

Become familiar with the program. Go to the high school training and observe the team.

      • 4

Attend freshman, JV and varsity high school soccer games in the fall of 8th grade to understand the level of play.

      • 5

Introduce yourself to the high school coach and tell the coach you look forward to playing.

      • 6

Ask the high school coach or trainer how to best prepare for the season.

      • 7

Seek out players already on the team for advice and support.

    Tips & Warnings

    • Expect a big commitment. High school soccer goes beyond many earlier programs. You can expect to play two or three games a week.

    • Prepare for lots of practice. Practice may be held on every non-game day.

    • Strike a balance. Learn early on how to juggle academics with soccer.

    • Brace yourself for the possibility of being cut from the team - something that doesn't often happen in earlier years.

    • If you have any condition that would impair or limit your ability to engage in physical activity, please consult a physician before attempting this activity. This information is not intended as a substitute for professional medical advice or treatment.

When you are preparing for high school soccer, don't be discouraged if your ball handling or other soccer skills aren't the greatest. Just keep a positive attitude and strong work ethic. Coaches look for dedication. Skills can be improved, as long as you're willing to put in the time and effort to improve yourself. Always try your hardest, during practice and games alike. If you're not going to give it your best, why give anything at all?

Be committed, and remember that a good portion of soccer is mental. Coaches don't only look for natural talent, but they look for dedication and strong work ethic. Skills can be improved, but only if you are prepared to work hard to improve them.
