How to Stimulate a 1-Month-Old's Physical Development

Rate: (2 Ratings)

Your 1-month-old has lost some of his jerky, spasmodic movements and is beginning to move his arms and legs in smooth and rhythmic patterns. Some gentle activities can help him on the road to even greater coordination. (The following information has been adapted from Dr. Segal's book series, "Your Child at Play.")

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Baby Rattles
  • Baby Toys

Step1
Massage your baby's fingers and toes one at time. He'll enjoy the sensation, and your touch will help increase his body awareness.
Step2
Rub his arms and legs with different textured fabrics, such as silk, velvet, satin, wool, flannel and terry cloth. Describe each one as you gently brush his skin.
Step3
Lift his arms up and down gently while he's lying on his back. Or try cycling his legs in a bicycle movement. Sing to him as you stretch and exercise his limbs.
Step4
Put your baby on his tummy on the floor, and then get down on his level, show him a bright toy and call his name. This will encourage him to lift his head and exercise his neck, back and arm muscles.
Step5
Give your baby a massage after his bath. Your touch will make your baby feel relaxed and secure.

Tips & Warnings

  • Respect your baby's cues. If a particular activity seems to stress him out or frustrate him, stop and give it a try another day.
  • Remember that all babies develop at different speeds, usually with spurts and plateaus.
  • Consult with your pediatrician if you have any concerns or questions about your newborn's development.
