How to Make Soy Wax Tarts

Soy wax is a high-quality and natural wax made from the soybean. Soy wax is used to make candles and tarts as well. Tarts are often called "wickless candles" and they are safer than traditional candles that require an open flame to disperse scent. The tarts are melted down into liquid state during use and disperse scent very effectively throughout the room. Make your own soy wax tarts to scent your home or to give as gifts to friends and family.

Things You'll Need

• Paper baking cups
• Muffin pan
• Newspaper
• Double boiler
• 1 lb. soy wax flakes
• 2 oz. of scent oil
• Metal spoon
• Candy thermometer

Instructions

1. Place your paper baking cups into the individual muffin cups in the muffin tin. The paper baking cups will make removal less difficult and also add a decorative fluted edge around the finished tarts.

2. Unfold a newspaper and lay it onto a flat surface. Place the muffin tin on top.

3. Fill the bottom portion of your double-boiler pan with water and place it on the stove.

4. Pour your wax flakes into the top portion of the double-boiler pan and rest the portion onto the bottom half that is already on the stove. Turn the heat to medium on the stove and allow the wax to melt.

5. Pour your 2 oz. of scent oil into the molten wax and stir it in with a spoon. Scent oils are available in the candle supply section of most craft stores.

6. Test the temperature of the wax with your candy thermometer. The wax needs to reach a temperature between 135 degrees and 140 degrees F in order to pour it into your molds. Raise or lower the heat on your stove to achieve this temperature, and use your thermometer to check every couple of minutes.

7. Pour the wax into the paper baking cups and allow the pan to sit and cool overnight. The tarts will be ready for using or gifting within eight to 12 hours.

8. Remove the paper baking cups by peeling them off of the tarts.
