How to Use the Electric Start on an Ariens Snowblower Model 1128

Many Ariens snow blower models are equipped with electric start devices. Because snow blowers are typically started and run during extreme weather conditions, it is important to use proper starting procedures, as outlined by the factory. By following a few easy steps, almost any user can be assured of getting the Ariens snow blower started in a matter of minutes regardless of weather conditions. Does this Spark an idea?

Things You'll Need

  • Clean rags
  • Fresh unleaded fuel (high-grade gasoline containing no alcohol)
  • Extension cord (120V 3-wire with ground)

Instructions

    • 1

Clean the area around the gas filler cap with rags. Remove the gas cap and fill the tank with high-grade gasoline (stop about 1/2 inch below filler neck). Replace the gas cap.

    • 2

Place the ignition key in the stop position to prevent starting, then squeeze the attachment clutch lever to the engaged position. Manually pull the recoil starter handle (rope pull cord) several times. If the impeller blades rotate, you are ready to attempt an electric start. If the impeller blades do not rotate, the unit is frozen and should not be started until it has thawed out (move the machine to an area with warmer temperatures until the impeller will move using the above steps).

    • 3

Allow unit to adjust to the outside temperature before clearing snow. Plug the machine into the extension cord. Plug the extension cord into an electrical outlet. Turn the snow discharge chute so that it is pointing straight ahead (in front of the machine).

    • 4

Disengage the traction clutch lever to prevent forward movement and the attachment drive clutch lever to prevent impeller movement. Press the fuel primer bulb gently three times when starting a cold engine.

    • 5

Place the key in the ignition and push it to the "run" position. Don't twist the key once it has been inserted. Apply the choke when starting a cold engine. Set the throttle lever to the "starting" position. Press and hold the starter button on the engine until the engine starts.

    • 6

Disconnect the power cord from the extension cord, then gradually reduce the choke as the engine warms. Reduce the throttle to slow as the engine warms up. After three minutes of warm-up time, set the throttle to "fast" to begin clearing snow.

Tips & Warnings

  • If the engine will not start within 15 seconds, wait a full 60 seconds more to try again. After repeated attempts, wait 5 minutes before attempting to start again, this time with the choke reduced.
