How to Remove Rust on a Metal Roof

Roofs are made of different types of materials for both residential and commercial buildings. Metal roofs are now a part of the landscape. But one problem with a metal roof is that over time the rustproof coating wears away, leading to rust. In time the rust can lead to rust holes that damage the roof. Regular maintenance of the metal roof and removal of the rust is far less expensive than replacing the entire roof due to extensive rust.

Things You'll Need

• Ladder
• Scrubbing pad and brush
• Mineral oil
• Naval jelly
• Paper towels
• Clean cloth

Instructions

1. Climb onto the roof using a sturdy ladder.

2. Use a scrubbing pad to scrub off as much of the rust as you can from the roof.

3. Pour mineral oil onto a paper towel and apply the oil to the rust on the metal roof. Wait about 30 minutes for the oil to soak in. Scrub at the rust with a scrubbing brush. Use a damp paper towel to wipe the area clean. Dry the area.

4. Apply naval jelly if any rust remains. Put on gloves and put naval jelly onto a clean cloth and apply it to the metal roof. Wait 15 to 20 minutes. Scrub off the rust with a scrubbing brush. Clean the area with a damp cloth.
