How to Remove the Pet Smell from Carpet Using Home Remedies

Pet smells are a part of every pet owner's life. Cats and dogs have accidents, especially when they are very young or very old. Some of these accidents happen on the carpet. While there are many over-the-counter products to treat pet odors, home remedies are a natural and inexpensive way to clean the carpet. Getting rid of pets smells is easy to do, but does require time for the smells to completely dissipate.

Things You'll Need

• Baking soda
• White vinegar
• Paper towels
• Sponge
• Dish washing liquid

Instructions

1. Clean up messes immediately. Use a paper towel to blot urine stains or to pick up fecal matter. The sooner the mess is cleaned up, the easier it is to get rid of the bad smell.

2. Wash the affected areas. Use a soapy sponge to wash the carpet. Use dish washing liquid and warm water.

3. Rinse the areas. Use a clean, wet sponge to get out the dish washing liquid.

4. Dry the area. Blot the carpet with paper towels to remove the excess water.

5. Apply white vinegar. Pour a small amount of white vinegar onto the stained area. White vinegar is a deodorizer.

6. Allow the carpet to almost completely dry.

7. Sprinkle a little baking soda onto the carpet when it is still slightly damp. If the carpet is too wet a paste forms, which is hard to clean up.

8. Let carpet dry completely. This can take several hours or more.

9. Vacuum the carpet to clean up the baking soda. Make certain the carpet is completely dry before vacuuming.
