Photoshop CS3 is a powerful graphics software program. It provides photographers, graphic designers and budding digital artists with the tools they need to manipulate and create images. Learn to use Photoshop CS3 by following a simple tutorial. Start by learning the layout of Photoshop's menus and palettes. Open a new file and then choose a color and a brush tool. Add a new layer, and then create a gradient. Create text, warp it and add a drop shadow. Finally, you collapse all your layers to create a finished, flat image.

      Turn on the computer and open Photoshop CS. Look at the top horizontal bar. Choose "File" and "New" from this Menu bar. The "New" panel window opens. Select "800x600" from the "Preset" options bar. Click "OK" to accept your entry and open the document window.

      Choose "Window" and "Tools" from the Menu bar and sub menu. The "Toolbox" panel contains different tool icons. Choose the "Brush" icon.

      Click on the "Options" bar brush icon and open the "Brush Picker" pop up menu. Choose "Soft Airbrush 60 px." Click anywhere in the document window to return to your image.

      Click on the "Foreground Color" box at the bottom of the "Toolbox" panel. The "Color Picker" opens. Select a bright green color and click "OK" to close the "Color Picker."

      Brush with your stylus across the tablet. You are airbrushing a bright green color. Hold down "Shift" on the keyboard as you press with your stylus. Move the stylus across the screen to the opposite end. Let go of the stylus. You are drawing straight lines.

      Choose "Image" "Adjust" and "Hue/Saturation." The "Hue/Saturation" controls window opens. Move the "Hue" slider to the left, and to the right. Your green line shifts color. Move the "Saturation" slider all the way to the left. Your green lines appear gray. Click "Cancel" to return to the image.

      Choose "Layer" and "Duplicate Layer" from the Menu bar and pull down menu. A new layer appears in the "Layers Control" panel. Click on the small black and white icon at the very bottom of the "Toolbox" panel. Your foreground color is now white and your background is black.

      Click on the "Gradient" icon. Click on the left topmost point of your image and drag down and to the right to the right bottom corner of the image. You now have a black and white gradient.

      Click on the "Foreground Color" icon and choose a bright blue color from the "Color Picker." Click on the "Text" icon. A cursor appears on your image. Select "Courier" from the "Font Select" box on the horizontal "Text" options bar. Choose "72 pt" from the "Point Size" box. Type "Photoshop" on your image screen.

      Choose "Edit" and "Free Transform" from the Menu bar and pull down menu. Put your cursor on the bottom right corner of the perimeter box that appears. Click and pull diagonally down to enlarge the text until it fills 1/2 of the screen. Hit "Return" to accept the size change.

      Click on the "Create Warped Text" icon on the horizontal options bar. Choose "Flag" from the option bar in the "Warp Text" controls window. Adjust the "Bend" slider to make sure the text fits within your image window. Click "OK" to accept the changes.

      Double click on the gradient image on your text layer. The "Layer Style" window opens. Click on "Drop Shadow" from the left hand side vertical "Styles" menu.

      Choose "Layer" and "Flatten Image." Your image is one layer. Select "File" and "Save." Name the file and save the file as a JPEG.

Tips & Warnings

  • Experiment with different preset gradients for subtle or bold looks.
