How to Update My Xbox BIOS Without a Mod Chip

Many Xbox game console owners would like to modify, or “mod," the operating system’s BIOS (basic input/output system) but balk at physically opening the Xbox to alter the electronic components inside. You can modify an Xbox through software, called “softmodding,” which, while still voiding the Microsoft warranty, will not physically damage the Xbox .You will need to use some free computer software programs created by Xbox game enthusiasts.

Tips & Warnings

  • Do not pull the memory card out of the memory card reader before its icon has disappeared from the desktop of the PC--otherwise a disk error on the memory card can occur.

  • Don’t go onto Xbox Live with a softmoded Xbox because Microsoft will detect the change in the BIOS and delete your account.
