Determine the type of e-mail protocol your account uses --- POP3, IMAP or HTTP. Most accounts use the POP3 method, which essentially stores your e-mails on its server until downloaded to a client such as Outlook Express. POP3 accounts include Yahoo! Mail, Gmail, MSN, Lycos Mail and Mail.com. AOL uses IMAP, in which the messages are always stored on the mail server, regardless of whether they are downloaded. Hotmail uses the HTTP protocol, which is web-based.
