Using Lotus Notes R5 with POP3 can boost your productivity

Lotus Notes is a productivity application that can be used for email, calendar management, Web browsing and as a client for customized Lotus Domino applications. Lotus Notes is a complete messaging and email system when used in conjunction with a Lotus Domino server. Lotus Notes will also work with popular standard email systems, including "Post Office Protocol" or POP3 when used in a standalone configuration.

      Run the installation program for Lotus Notes R5 and leave the "I want to connect to a Domino server" option blank. Lotus Notes will be installed as a standalone application. Click "next" to move to the next screen.

      Click the "Internet Mail Servers" option, which includes POP, IMAP and SMTP. You will also select either "LAN" or "Modem" for your Internet connection. The "LAN" selection is typically used for networked, Cable or a DSL connection. Click "Next."

      Select "POP" from the first dropdown menu. Enter a name to identify this Internet account in the second dropdown menu. Enter the server name provided by your Internet provider in the third menu. POP server names normally use a format similar to "pop.mailprovider.com" or "mail.mailprovider.com." Enter the name of the simple mail transfer protocol "SMTP" server in the next field and click "Next."

      Enter the email account name and password provided by your email provider in the corresponding fields. Complete the password verification field and click the secure sockets layer "SSL" option only if your provider has indicated it as a requirement. Click "Next" to continue and click "Finish" on the following screen.

      Use the "File" -- "Open" menu to open the email file you create, or you can double-click the icon for this database if it is present on your Notes client desktop. The email file is actually a Lotus Notes database file which is based upon a mail template. Click "New" on the tool bar at the top of the screen to compose new mail messages. Click "send/receive" to send email and retrieve messages from your email account. Messages you receive will be listed in the main window of your screen. Double-click the messages to open them and use the options from the toolbar at the top of the screen to delete, reply, forward and archive as needed.
