How to Receive a Fax on an HP OfficeJet V40
From printing documents to processing scanned images, the Hewlett-Packard (HP) OfficeJet V40 also lets you send faxes to other parties as well as receive faxes. The multi-function printer is equipped with a fax receiving utility that you can configure to automatically print faxes as the machine receives the documents. You can also manually receive and print faxes--ideal if you only have one phone line. HP OfficeJet V40's fax component is a standalone utility that works when your computer is turned off.

Setting the HP OfficeJet V40 to Receive Faxes Automatically

Turn on the HP OfficeJet V40.

Press the "Auto Answer" button on the front of the printer. The light next to the button will illuminate. Your OfficeJet V40 is now set to receive faxes automatically.

Press "Options." Select "Setup" to configure the number of rings before the machine picks up. Use the right arrow button to select "3:Basic Fax Options." Press "Enter." Use the right arrow button to select "3:Rings to Answer." Press "Enter." Press the right arrow button to select the number of rings. Press "Enter" to select the number of rings.

Press "Options." Select "Setup" to select a distinctive ring pattern. Use the right arrow button to select "4:Advanced Fax Options." Press "Enter." Use the right arrow button to select "2:Answer Ring Pattern." Press "Enter." Press the right arrow button to scroll through the available ring patterns. Press "Enter" to select the ring pattern you want.

Turn on the HP OfficeJet V40.

Press the "Auto Answer" button on the front of the printer until the light next to the button is not illuminated. Your OfficeJet V40 is now set to receive faxes manually.

Pick up the printer's telephone handset when the phone rings. Listen for the fax tone--it will be one to two high-pitch tones.

Press "Start." Press the "Black" or "Color" button to select what type of fax is being received. If you don't know if the fax is going to contain color text or elements, press "Black."

Hang up the printer's telephone handset. The HP OfficeJet V40 will now start receiving and printing the fax.

Tips & Warnings
Make sure you have plenty of paper loaded in your HP OfficeJet V40 so it can print your received faxes. If the printer runs out of paper, the incoming fax will be stored in the printer's memory, but the memory is limited in the number of faxes it can store.
You can also set up your HP OfficeJet V40 to receive faxes by using the HP Director software installed on your computer. Open Director, click on "Settings" then select "Fax Settings." Click on the "Answering" tab. Select "Automatic" or "Manual" to select if you want the printer to receive faxes automatically or manually. When done making your selections to number of rings and patterns. Click "OK."
