How to Become a Plane Engineer
A plane engineer, more commonly referred to as a flight engineer, is a professional who ensures an aircraft is working properly both on the ground and in flight. These professionals inspect the outside of the plane before a flight, and helps the pilot and copilot maintain the plane by checking all systems throughout the flight and monitoring fuel consumption. This can include making minor repairs during the flight. These professionals obtain training similar to pilots, and have a combination of education and flight time. The Bureau of Labor Statistics lists a national average salary of $111,680 per year in May 2008.

Obtain education from a school certified by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). Although there are no degree requirements to become a flight engineer, employment opportunities will increase for those who obtain at least an associate's degree from school certified by the FAA. Education for a flight engineer is similar to that of a pilot. Preferred coursework includes English, mathematics, physics and aeronautical engineering.

Qualify to obtain a Federal Aviation Administration flight engineer license. To receive a flight engineer license, it requires at least 250 hours of flight experience. Other requirements include passing a strict physical examination and a written exam. Some of these requirements can be obtained through education and training. Keep records of the types of aircraft you flew with and equipment you used during your education and training, which will assist you in finding employment.

Create a resume to highlight your education, skills, experience and license. Most employers often have specific requirements, such as the type of aircraft or systems they currently use, and they will expect job applicants to have some experience. Include all of the aircraft and equipment you have experience with on your resume. Although the licensing exam requires a physical examination, include your current phycial health and any health-related activities you do in your spare time. Most employers are interested in candidates who are physically fit and can handle the hours and travel required for this occupation.

Apply for flight engineer jobs. Jobs can be found through Internet job boards, airline websites, as well as through your educational institution. Many employers will seek recently qualified candidates through educational institutions. Working with the career center at your school will assist in finding related jobs.

Apply for as many positions related to flight engineering as possible to increase employment opportunities.
Be willing to relocate if necessary, as many of these opportunities are not locally based.
Avoid referencing physical activities that may be dangerous. Although employers prefer flight engineers in good physical health, dangerous physical activities may present you as a risk to the employer.
