How to Prepare for the Postal Exam
The postal exam prepares you for a job with the United States Postal Service. This organization has more than 600,000 employees, according to the Postal Exam website. This makes the United States Postal Service one of the largest employers in the world. It offers jobs in rural carrier, city carrier, mail handler, mail processing clerk and distribution associate. When applying for any of these jobs, applicants are required to take the postal exam 473. This exam will show that you're knowledgeable in memorization, numbers and speed. In order to prepare for this exam, you will need to apply and review for your chosen career.

Apply for any of the careers you're interested in through the USPS website. Search within your state to see if there are any jobs available. Once you find your chosen job, click on it to read the job description and requirements.

Click the "Apply" button once you read about the position. Register by providing your name and email address. On the next page, you will have to fill out an application for the job.

Check your email for the scheduling information on the postal exam 473. You will be able to choose a time, date and location for taking the exam. Depending on your job, you will be able to take your exam online or at a testing center.

Study with a postal exam book. You can find these guides at the library or book stores. In the books, you will receive information on the postal exam 473 including practice tests and exercises. Some books will include computerized practice tests.

Take the online postal exam, if the application requires you to. You will have to complete it within 14 days in order to sit for the one hour postal examination. You can schedule to take the assessment anytime, as long as it's within that time frame. The assessment will be about memorization skills, mathematical skills and speed skills.

Read the confirmation email requiring the proctored postal exam. You want to read it carefully since it will explain the necessary materials for the examination. Some might include a state photo ID, your login ID, password and candidate ID. You will need all of these to access the exam from the testing center. This proctored exam will take 90 minutes to complete.
