How to Record Music From Radio Receivers to PC

Connect a PC to a radio receiver for recording music.

Recording music from a radio receiver onto a personal computer is a fast and simple way to build a music collection for virtually no cost. The receiver connects to a PC with a standard set of stereo cables and a Y-adapter with a mini-plug that attaches to the computer's audio input jack. Personal computers are usually pre-installed with audio recording software, such as Microsoft Sound Recorder, so no special programs or equipment will be needed.

Things You'll Need

• Stereo cables with RCA-type plugs on both ends
• Y-adapter with two RCA jacks and one 3.5mm mini-plug

Instructions

1. Connect the red and white plugs on one end of the stereo cables to the audio output jacks on the radio receiver, then plug the other ends into the jacks on the Y-adapter.

2. Connect the Y-adapter mini-plug to the Line IN jack on the PC, typically on the back of the tower.

3. Open the recording software on the PC by clicking twice on the program name.

4. Turn on the radio receiver and tune to the desired station.

5. Click the round, red "Record" button on the PC software to capture the radio broadcast. Click "Stop" when finished.

6. Click the "File" tab and select "Save" to enter a name for the recording, then click "Save" again to store the audio file on the PC.

Tips & Warnings

• Disconnect the radio receiver from the power while hooking up the equipment to a computer.
