How to Obtain a Work Permit in the U.S.
A work permit serves as authorization to accept and perform employment in the United States. A work permit, known as an employment authorization document (EAD), differs from an employment visa. Work permits are valid for one year and do not limit a foreign national to a specific employer. Work permit holders must apply for an EAD card by filing Form I-765 with the United States Citizenship & Immigration Services (USCIS).

1
Obtain Form I-765 from the USCIS website. Read eligibility requirements to determine whether you qualify for an EAD card. If eligible, proceed to the Form I-765 instructions. Although not the only eligibility category, many EAD cards are filed by foreign nationals with a pending adjustment of status (green card) application.
-
2
Review the Form I-765 instructions thoroughly to ensure that you possess all supporting documentation and information necessary for completion of the application, including a current I-94 card copy (front and back), prior EAD card copy (if applicable), two passport photographs and filing fees.

3
Complete Form I-765 and attach supporting documentation and filing fees. Using the instruction guide, address your application and other items to the appropriate USCIS service center. Your service center will vary based on location.
-
4
Look for a USCIS filing receipt to come in the mail. The receipt includes a receipt number which can be used to track the status of your application over the internet. Log onto USCIS to view your application status. Once approved, you will receive an EAD card in the mail, along with an I-765 approval notice.
-
5
Keep your EAD card with you at all times. When applying for employment, you may need to present your EAD card or supply information from your EAD card on the job application. At the expiration of your EAD card (the date is labeled on the document), you may apply for an EAD renewal using Form I-765.

Tips & Warnings
You are no longer permitted to work once your EAD card expires. To prevent this situation, apply for a renewal a few months in advance of your EAD expiration date.
