Things You'll Need

  • Measuring spoons
  • White vinegar
  • Spray bottle
  • Baking soda
  • Old toothbrush
  • Vacuum
  • Laundry detergent with enzymes

      Measure and pour 1 1/2 tbsp. white vinegar into a spray bottle. Fill the remainder of the spray bottle with water. Shake the bottle to mix the solution.

      Spray the vinegar solution onto the source of the vomit odor in your carpeting. Soak the carpeting with the vinegar solution, then allow it to dry completely. Once the vinegar solution has dried, vacuum the carpeting.

      Sprinkle baking soda onto the carpeting at the source of the vomit odor. Work the baking soda into the carpet fibers using an old toothbrush. Allow the baking soda to sit on the carpeting and in the fibers for a few hours or overnight, dependent upon the severity of the odor.

      Vacuum up the baking soda and the remnants of vomit odor in your carpet.

      Tackle any remaining vomit odor with a paste made of equal parts laundry detergent with enzymes and water. Apply with a dampened clean cloth and work into the carpet fibers. Allow the paste to sit on the site of the vomit odor for 15 minutes, then rinse with a clean cloth and cool water. Blot up excess moisture and allow the carpet to dry.

      Fluff the carpet fibers and blend them back into the surrounding carpet by combing them with a wide-tooth comb.

Tips & Warnings

  • Removing vomit odors relies heavily on complete removal of the vomit stain. Use a wet vac, if possible, to remove the moisture left behind from a vomit stain.

  • Diluted lemon juice works to effectively remove vomit odor but may bleach some carpets. Test in an inconspicuous area first.
