How to Change a Makita Planer Blade

How to Change a Makita Planer Blade thumbnail
An old-fashioned planer took lots of energy to use as compared to an electric Makita planer.

Planer blades will wear down over time. Replacement planer blades are cheap, costing no more than $5 to $10 per pack. Replacing the blades will take just a few seconds, but the job requires a unique wrench and precise placement of the blade. If the blade is not placed properly, it may fall off during use.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Put on gloves. The blades are very sharp and can easily cut your fingers.

    • 2

Turn the planer upside down. Behind the blades will be three screws. Unscrew them with the wrench provided with the planer. The screws have a unique slot to which only the Makita planer wrench can connect.

    • 3

Move the adjusting plate under the screw to loosen the blades. Slide the blades out.

    • 4

Slide the new blades in. Lock the adjusting plate on top of the blades. This will secure the blades tightly into position.

    • 5

Screw the screws back in with the wrench.

Tips & Warnings

  • Change the blades under good lighting. You want to make sure you are doing everything properly.

  • Double check the blades to make sure they are tight. If they are not, they can shoot out of the planer, becoming dangerous projectiles.
