Early PlayStation 3 consoles feature backwards compatibility with PlayStation 2 games. These consoles include the 20GB CECHB01, the 60GB CECHA01, and the 80GB CECHE01. If you have one of these consoles, all you have to do is create an internal PS2 memory card to save data. (Note, however, that not every PS2 game is compatible with backwards-compatible PS3s. See Resources for a link to a Compatibility Status checker.)

Instructions

    • 1

Turn on your PS3 console and navigate to the “Games” tab in the Xross Media Bar.

    • 2

      Select “Memory Card Utility (PS2/PS).”

    • 3

Select “New Internal Memory Card” to create a new memory card.

    • 4

Choose “Internal Memory Card (PS2)” to create a PS2-specific memory card. You can change the name associated with the memory card, but anything with “PS2” is sufficient to let you know that it is a PS2 memory card.

    • 5

Assign the memory card to “Slot 1.” If another internal memory card is associated with Slot 1, then change that memory card to another slot and set your PS2 card as Slot 1. You can only use the memory card if is assigned to Slot 1.

    • 6

Insert the PS2 game disc into your PS3’s disc drive. If it is compatible, the game will show up under the “Games” tab in the Xross Media Bar.

    • 7

Select the game and press “X” to start it. You will be able to play the game just as you would on a PS2.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you wish to play the game online, you will need to set up your PS3’s network configuration.

  • You can adjust PS2 Upscaling and Smoothing in the “Game Settings” option under the “Settings” tab in the Xross Media Bar.
