How to Respond to a Newspaper Job Ad

How to Respond to a Newspaper Job Ad thumbnail
Newspapers carry job ads.

Local and national newspapers are great places to find job ads. Job hunters use these outlets to make their search easier, but there are some pitfalls. When you find a job ad that fits your skills, qualifications and career goals, you need to act fast.

There is a lot more competition for publicly posted job openings. The word is out, and many candidates will submit their information. You still have a chance through by taking steps that will help you respond to a job ad quickly in a manner that will help your application stand out.

Instructions

    • 1

Fine-tune your résumé so it highlights the skills and qualifications you have that are also mentioned in the ad. Use the same keywords when possible.

    • 2

Research the company that posted the ad and find out the name and title of the person who will be sorting through the applications. This might be a human resources officer or department manager.

    • 3

Write a custom cover letter for your résumé. Address your letter to the person identified in step two. Use proper business letter formatting and keep your tone professional. Address any special concerns or requirements mentioned in the ad that are not covered in your résumé itself.

    • 4

Fill out the company's online applications if requested in the ad. Be truthful and complete. Blank fields may disqualify your application.

    • 5

Mail your résumé and cover letter to the hiring company. Even if you fill out an online application, this step could make your application stand out from the pack. If the job is local, you may also want to consider dropping off your documents in person. If you go this route, dress professionally and be prepared for an interview.

    • 6

Follow up. If you do not hear back from the company in question within a month, call or send an e-mail asking about your application. You may also want to consider mailing an updated résumé and cover letter. Even if the recruiter has found someone for the original position, this will keep your file open for future openings.

Tips & Warnings

  • Be wary of any online applications that requires your Social Security Number or directs you to an unfamiliar website. These are tools con artist use to steal identities.

  • Always follow the application instructions mentioned in the ad. For example, if the ad says "no phone calls please," don't call the office. Ignoring these instructions illustrates that you can't follow instructions--not the impression you want to give to a potential employer.
