How to Remove & Clean Asbestos
Asbestos is hazardous material. If it is sealed inside walls or some other structure so that there is no risk of exposure, it is best to leave it there. However, if there is a chance that people will be exposed to asbestos, remove it as soon as possible. When removing the asbestos, precautions must be taken to prevent exposure. - Disposable coveralls
- Disposable shoe booties
- Boots
- Gloves
- Heavy plastic
- Duct tape
- Heavy plastic bags
- Hose and water source

Put on protective gear. Inhaling or coming into contact with asbestos is extremely dangerous. Wear an approved face mask, gloves, boots, goggles, shoe booties, head cover and coveralls.

Spray the asbestos with water before starting removal. Wet it again during removal if it dries and after removal before transport.

Hang plastic in any doorways to keep the asbestos from contaminating any other areas. Cover walls and floors as well, so that clean up will be easier.

Use putty knives to scrape sprayed-on asbestos from surfaces and put it in bags made for the purpose of disposing of asbestos.

Seal bags to keep the contaminant from getting out. Wipe down all tools, step ladders and other material in the room. Throw rags away.

Spray a sealant over the area from which asbestos was removed to trap remaining fibers. Rinse and remove plastic covering. Roll the covering in on itself as you go. Bag up the wrap and and dispose of it along with coveralls, gloves and booties.
