How to Stop Rust on Chrome

Chrome is a popular metal used for many things. Furniture (both indoor and outdoor) and parts of machines and vehicles can be made of chrome. But one of the problems with chrome is its tendency to rust. If the chrome object is in places with high humidity or lots of moisture, the metal combines with the moisture and becomes rusted. There are several rust remedies. Once the rust is off the chrome, you can then stop further rusting. Does this Spark an idea?

  • Scrubbing pads or steel wool
  • White vinegar
  • Paper towels
  • Naval jelly
  • Soft cloths
  • Mineral oil or WD-40

      Get rid of of any surface rust. Use a scrubbing pad or steel wool to gently scrape the rust off the surface of the chrome.

      Apply vinegar. Pour white vinegar onto a paper towel and apply it to the rusted areas. Wait 10 to 20 minutes for the vinegar to soak in. Then scrub off the area with a scrubbing pad. Wipe the chrome clean and dry with a paper towel. Vinegar has acetic acid, which helps to remove rust.

      Apply naval jelly. Buy naval jelly and gloves from a hardware store. Put on the gloves. Place a small amount of naval jelly onto a clean cloth and apply it to the chrome. Wait 15 to 20 minutes. Scrub off the rust with a scrubbing pad. Clean the area with a damp cloth.

Tips & Warnings

  • Prevent rusting. Buy mineral oil or WD-40 from a hardware store. Apply a thin coat of either product to the chrome. Do this regularly. Having oil on the surface of chrome objects is one of the cheapest and easiest ways to stop rust from forming.
