Instructions

  1. Hunting and Collecting Morels

    • 1

Hunt for morel mushrooms in Michigan from late April to June, when daytime temperatures have reached at least 60 degrees F and nighttime temperatures are above 40 degrees F, preferably the day after a rain.

    • 2

Search in areas with rich, sandy soil; near streams or river beds; and in wooded areas, specifically around decaying timber and shaded underbrush. Once you've found a morel, look around as they usually exist in groups.

    • 3

Pick morels by pinching or cutting them just above the ground. Do not pull them out of the ground. This leaves the root system intact and allows more morels to grow in the same place.

    • 4

Collect morels in a mesh bag so the spores will fall through the holes and spread, growing new morels. Do not collect morels in a plastic bag as this could cause them to get soft and begin to rot.

    Cooking, Eating and Storing Morels

    • 5

Positively identify your mushrooms as morels before eating them. Some potentially poisonous varieties of wild mushrooms look very similar to morels.

    • 6

Cook and eat fresh morel mushrooms within one to two days. If you can't eat your morels right away, dry them in a food dehydrator or in the oven. Always cook morel mushrooms thoroughly before eating them.

    • 7

Search for recipes that will help you cook your morels properly and enjoy their unique flavor and texture.

    • 8

Store fresh morel mushrooms in a paper bag. Do not store fresh mushrooms in a plastic bag or sealed container. Store dried morel mushrooms in a paper bag or sealed container for several months.

Tips & Warnings

  • Be patient. Morels are hard to find and may take several hours or days of hunting.

  • Confirm that your mushrooms are morels before eating them.

  • Seek medical attention if you experience any adverse effects after eating morels.
