How to Tell Female & Male Zebra Danios Apart

Zebra danios are popular aquarium fish, also called zebra fish, originally from India. They can grow to a length of 2.5 inches, and they are a quick-moving, schooling fish that can be kept in most community tanks. If you are interested in breeding your zebra danios, make sure that you know how to tell the males apart from the females.

Instructions

    • 1

Inspect the body shape. Males are slender and rather sleek, while female zebra danios are more rounded. They can be slightly lumpy when they are carrying eggs.

    • 2

Look at the color. Male zebra danios are more vibrant in color than the females, and their streaks tend to be more yellow. In females, the yellow stripes are so faded as to seem silver.

    • 3

Compare the zebra danios in the tank. Males will be significantly smaller than females.
