1
Remove the toilet tank lid from the toilet tank and set it in a safe place on a flat surface. Find the toilet water supply shut off valve behind the toilet. Turn the valve handle clockwise to stop the water flow to the tank. Flush the toilet and hold the flush lever down until most of the water is out of the tank. Use towels to soak up the remaining water.

2
Turn the water line connector counter-clockwise with a pair of slip joint pliers where the line connects to the bottom of the tank. The water line threads onto the exposed threads of the fill valve. Remove the water line from the fill valve.

3
Remove the nut on the bottom of the tank that secures the fill valve to the tank with the slip joint pliers. Reach inside the tank and pull the fill hose off the flush overflow valve. The fill hose attaches to the top of the overflow valve with a small spring clip. Pull the clip with your fingers to remove the hose. Pull the Fluidmaster 400A fill valve out of the toilet tank.

4
Clean around the hole that the fill valve inserts into the tank with a rag. Remove any sediment that may be around the hole. This ensures a clean surface to mount the fill valve to prevent leaks.
-
5
Set the new Fluidmaster fill valve into the hole in the toilet tank. The collar above the float mechanism should be 1-inch taller than the overflow tube. If necessary adjust the height of the fill valve. You can twist the threaded shank in or out to adjust the valve height.

6
Thread the securing nut over the exposed threads of the fill valve on the bottom of the tank until hand tight. Turn the securing nut another ¾ turn with the slip joint pliers. Wrap the exposed threads of the fill valve with plumbers tape.
-
7
Place the end of the fill hose over the overflow tube. Slide the hose holding clip over the top of the tube to secure the hose in place.
-
8
Thread the water line to the fill valve threads below the tank until hand tight. Turn the water line connection another ½ turn with the slip joint pliers. Turn on the water supply at the valve and check for leaks as the tank fills.
-
9
Adjust the float mechanism by pinching the c-clip on the float wire and moving the clip up or down as necessary. Place the toilet tank lid on the tank.
