How to Make Ringtones for an iPhone 3G on a Mac
Adding custom ringtones to your iPhone 3G gives the device a taste of your personal style. Purchasing and downloading ringtones used to be the only option, but now you may create custom ringtones from your iTunes music library for free. From your Mac desktop or laptop computer, you may edit a song in iTunes and convert it to the necessary file type for a ringtone synchronization with your iPhone 3G.
Instructions
-
-
1
Highlight a song from your iTunes library. Right-click the song and select “Get Info” from the resulting drop-down menu. Click the “Options” tab.
-
2
Check the “Start Time” and “Stop Time” boxes to determine how long the song will play. Enter time values in both fields to designate the portion of the song to be used as a ringtone. Do not create a window of playback time greater than 30 seconds, or the ringtone will not play on your iPhone.
-
-
3
Right-click on the song in the iTunes library again. Click “Convert Selection to AAC” from the drop-down menu. This will create a new Advanced Audio Coding copy of the shortened song. Select “AAC Encoder” from the "Importing" tab in your iTunes Preferences’ Advanced menu if the drop-down menu displays another file type, such as MP3.
-
4
Drag and drop the newly encoded AAC clip to your desktop if it does not save there automatically.
-
5
Delete the AAC clip from your iTunes library. Doing so will not delete the file itself.
-
6
Right-click the encoded AAC clip on your desktop. Select “Get Info” from the drop-down menu.
-
7
Change the file’s extension from “.M4A” to “.M4R” in the “Name & Extension” field. This converts the encoded AAC clip to a ringtone file that iTunes can recognize.
-
8
Double-click the ringtone file to add it to your iTunes library. Sync your iPhone 3G with the ringtones folder next time you connect the device, if it is not already configured to do so.

Tips & Warnings
Restore your song to its original condition. Go back to iTunes and uncheck the custom start and stop times on the original digital music file. Feel free to delete the values in both fields as well.

fyi a length "greater than 30 seconds" means between 30 and 40 seconds. If it's too long it won't transfer to iphone, too short it won't play on iphone.
