How to Make a Kid's Fancy Dress Competition Costume
A fancy dress could be used in a general costume competition or in the stiff competition of the beauty pageant world. Whichever competition you are preparing for, the details and accessories of the dress will remain the same. A fancy dress has all the girlish frills and accents you can imagine, including beading, lace, ruffles, bows and sequins. The trick is to produce an over-the-top, fancy dress without making it appear overdone. Careful placement of details will be key in producing a fancy yet classy dress.

1
Start with an already-made dress as a base. An ideal choice would be a Disney princess costume dress, as these will have many of the desired frills already in place. These can be found at costume stores, Disney stores and even many department stores and online.

2
Cut rectangular pieces of fabric out of the desired material to add layers, tiers or ruffles to the dress. You should cut strips, long enough to wrap around the front of the dress and approximately three to four inches wide. Lace or an iridescent or sparkling fabric will work best. Lay the cut pieces on top of the dress to figure the desired placement. Add layers to the skirt area or sleeves. Trim the excess fabric to the desired width when you achieve the ideal placement.

3
Glue or sew the added pieces of fabric to the desired place on the dress.

4
Lay out beads and sequins on the desired areas of the dress. The bodice, neckline or hem will likely be the ideal spots. Once you are settled on placement, use fabric glue to adhere them in place or sew them in place.

5
Add jewelry elements such as a sparking broach or necklace to accent the dress and to add a degree of sparkle and class to the dress. The shoes can be coordinated with the dress by picking neutral colors of white, black or silver, or can match the dress color exactly. Decorative elements, such as glitter, beads or sequins would also be appropriate on the shoes.
