How to Make a Resume for Hotel Staff

If you want to break into the hotel industry, you will need to begin by making a strong first impression. To do this, you should craft the kind of resume that will make any hotel employer want to get in touch with you. Your resume should not appear as a generic list of former schools and employers, but as a carefully-crafted summary of the achievements that make you a desirable candidate for your future hotel staff position.

Instructions

    • 1

Write an objective statement that specifically spells out the staff position you desire in a single sentence. If you're applying for a receptionist job, say so. If you want to obtain a position as a hotel manager, then clearly mention it. Hotels often have hundreds of different positions, so make your exact intentions clear. "Seeking an exciting position in the hotel industry" will not suffice as an objective statement.

    • 2

List your education in order of relevance. For each school, begin with a boldface heading with the name of the institution and the year(s) attended, followed by a list of achievements, including degrees received, awards, accolades and notable achievements. Highlight any achievements relevant to the hospitality industry, as this will help you to make the best impression with hotel employers. Also highlight experience relevant to your desired position. For example, if you seek a management position, list any hotel management courses or business degrees.

    • 3

List your work experience in order of relevance. If you have any previous hotel jobs or other positions relating to hospitality, such as restaurant or cruise ship positions, list those first even if they do not represent your most recent work experience. Also highlight jobs relevant to the specific position you seek. For example, if you want to become a chef at the hotel, highlight previous positions in which you performed chef duties.

    • 4

Conclude with a "Skills" list, indicated by a heading with the word "Skills" written in boldface. List only skills that an employer will find relevant to your desired position. For example, if you seek a receptionist job, you might mention that you can type 65 words per minute.

Tips & Warnings

  • Though not as common, Resume for Jobs.com recommends including a "Personal Summary" as part of your resume, which describes in paragraph form why you believe that the hotel should hire you for the position you seek, as well as a very brief introduction about yourself.
