A hard drive password prevents access by unauthorized users.

Your Dell Inspiron 6000 laptop includes a separate password security feature besides the user login password available directly through the operating system. The BIOS user password restricts access to the hard drive, which will prevent the operating system from loading if the wrong password is entered.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the Dell 6000 laptop and power it back on immediately. Repeatedly tap "F2" as the Inspiron boots up to access the BIOS menu screen.

    • 2

Press the Inspiron's right arrow key twice to access the "Security" submenu. Scroll down to the "Set User Password" option and tap Enter.

    • 3

Type in the existing hard drive password and press Enter again. Type in a new password and hit Enter, or leave the field blank and hit Enter if you want to remove the Inspiron's password.

    • 4

Tap the right arrow key three times to access the "Exit" submenu. Scroll to the "Exit Saving Changes" option and press Enter to save the password change and restart the Dell 6000.

Tips & Warnings

  • There is also an option labeled "Set Supervisor Password" in the "Security" submenu. The supervisor password restricts access to the BIOS menu, while the user password prevents access to the Dell Inspiron 6000's operating system.

  • If you change the wrong BIOS setting you can easily reset all of the BIOS options back to their original condition by choosing the "Load Setup Defaults" option in the "Exit" submenu.

  • If you have forgotten the current password there is no way to manually reset it through the BIOS menu. You must contact Dell's customer support and provide them with the express service code on the sticker on the back end of the Inspiron 6000. The customer service representative will remove the BIOS password for you.
