How to Use a Ratchet Set

Ratchet sets are extremely useful around the house and in the garage, and consist of several different sized ratchets wrenches. Each ratchet wrench has an accompanying socket. The socket and ratchet are used to loose or tighten bolts that would otherwise be impossible to budge by hand. The ratchet is clipped onto the bolt, and then the socket is attached to the ratchet and twisted so that the bolt can be turned in the direction you desire. Use gloves when using ratchet sets so that you do not get blisters. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Select the right sized ratchet wrench and socket based on the size of the bolt you are working on. Fit the socket over the bolt. The socket should firmly fit over the bolt, and you should not be able to turn it with your hands.

    • 2

Connect the ratchet wrench to the socket by inserting the square end of the ratchet wrench into the square hole found on the back of the socket. Turn the lever or key on the back of the ratchet in the direction you want to turn the bolt (left to loosen the bolt, right to tighten it).

    • 3

Grab the handle of the ratchet tightly and pull it in an arcing motion in the direction opposite of how you want the bolt to turn. When you reach the end of the arc the wrench will make a specific ratcheting sound, which is your cue to push the ratchet hard in the direction you want to turn the bolt. Keep repeating this motion back and forth until the bolt either comes off or is completely tightened, depending on what you are trying to do.

Press the button on the back head of the ratchet to disconnect the ratchet from the socket.
