Lacquer finishes have a long history, originating in China during the Neolithic period, according to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Lacquer is a resin produced from the sap of Rhus verniciflua trees. Black lacquer finishes can be created either by mixing lacquer with black pigments, or applying clean lacquer as a top coat over black painted or stained surfaces. While considered a highly durable finish, black lacquer is subject to dulling and cloudiness from the buildup of waxes, polishes and environmental pollutants, but the glossy finish can be easily revived with the simple application of a specialized cleaning product.
