How to Make a Dry Terrarium
A dry terrarium is a habitat for certain plants. It is a contained area that can be open at the top or completely closed. Some terrariums also provide a home for small animals such as reptiles. A terrarium can be created in a variety of containers such as empty two-liter bottles and gallon glass jars, as well as aquariums for larger habitats and are easily adapted to fit any environment. Plants that do not grow to a large size are the best choices for a terrarium. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Small gravel will provide drainage Place a thin layer of gravel in the bottom of the container to allow for drainage when the plants are watered. Gravel needs to be the base layer no matter what type of container you are using.
-
2
Pour one-half inch of horticultural charcoal over the gravel. The charcoal will absorb any odors from soil or plants.
-
-
3
Place Sphagnum moss over the charcoal to keep the soil from seeping down into the lower layers. This is optional but will prevent soil loss.
-
4
Add enough soil to contain the roots of your chosen plants. Dampen the soil slightly, leaving it dry enough that it will not stick to the sides of the container.
-
5
Scoop holes in the soil with a large spoon in the places where you want the plants. Place the roots in the holes and cover with soil.
-
6
Add any decorative items that you desire, such as rocks, driftwood or shells.
-
7
Lightly spray the leaves of the plants and surface of the soil with water. Check weekly for moisture and spray when needed.

Tips & Warnings
When creating a terrarium in a container with a small opening, such as a two-liter bottle, use a long piece of stiff wire with a hook formed at one end to dig holes and manipulate plants into place. If an open terrarium is preferred, the top section of the bottle can be removed.
Create hills and valleys in the soil before planting to make the plants in the middle of the terrarium easier to view.
If the terrarium is enclosed, allow the leaves of the plants to dry after spraying before you replace the lid.
