How to Import a Used RV to Canada

Follow the rules to import an RV to Canada.

When importing an RV from the United States to Canada, you must follow the rules laid out by the Canadian Registrar of Imported Vehicles. Once all the paperwork, inspections and fees are cleared, the RV may enter Canada.

Instructions

1. Check with the Canadian registrar that your RV is allowed in Canada. Some vehicles are not admissible to Canada from the United States.

2. Obtain a copy of the RV's permanent history by contacting your state's department of motor vehicles.

3. Get the RV inspected to obtain proof it meets Transport Canada Motor Vehicle Safety Standards. This form can be found online or requested at your state's department of motor vehicles. Take the form to a mechanic.

4. Provide the recall clearance letter required by the Registrar of Imported Vehicles. Obtain information from manufacturer showing there are no recalls on the RV. You can fax the form to 888-642-9899.

5. Pay the applicable fees when you cross into Canada. These fees include taxes and custom fees assigned when you cross the border. This will vary based on the type of RV. Select an easily accessible crossing to get into Canada. It is best to cross on a major highway.
