Digital signage should be dynamic.

Digital signage is an effective way to display content that is targeted at a specific audience. However, without strong content, digital signage is not an effective medium. Create content that is appropriate for your audience and looks good on your digital signage monitor to reach the maximum impact.

Instructions

    • 1

Look at the surroundings around your digital signage monitors. Make note of prominent colors. From these colors, choose a basic color scheme for your digital signage content. Work with a few select colors to ensure that your digital signage looks cohesive.

    • 2

Choose easy to read, attractive fonts for headings and text on your digital signage. Use the same text styles for all digital signage content to ensure that messages are consistent and mesh well together.

    • 3

Test font sizes on your digital signage monitor. Take the smallest monitor that you will be using and test different font sizes on that monitor. Find the smallest font that can be read from a distance on that monitor, and use only fonts that size and larger.

    • 4

Make a list of the information that you plan to convey on digital signage. Once the list is complete, write short sentences about each topic to be displayed on your digital signage. Ensure that all sentences are brief and easy to understand. If you need to create a longer message, break it into short sentences that can be displayed in sequence one screen at a time.

    • 5

Choose or create an image to go with each topic on your list. The image should be comprised of a graphic and space to enter text. The images should either allow you to display text over part of the graphic, or should have a plain background section where text can be entered.

    • 6

Using image editing software, take each image file and enter the text on the plain or simplest part of the image. Ensure that all text can be read easily. Choose dark fonts over light backgrounds and light fonts over dark backgrounds. If you have Adobe Flash, create moving text and designs on the images. This will allow you to have dynamic digital signage content.

    • 7

Take each piece of content and schedule it in your digital signage play list. If you have not done so in the individual files, set the images to fade in and out as they appear on and leave the screen.

Tips & Warnings

  • Images for digital signage can be found at Jupiterimages.com, Flickr.com or several other places. Ensure that you pay any licensing fees and use images that have been approved for commercial usage.

  • Ensure that the content on your digital signage is relevant to your audience.

  • Leave images on the screen for enough time to allow people to read the messages, but not for so long that readers lose interest.

  • Make use of moving text and images to keep your viewers entertained.

  • Avoid making images too busy or difficult to read.

  • Ensure that all images mesh well together and make sense as a cohesive unit.
