How to Forward Ports on a Linksys

Linksys routers are common in home and business environments, and they allow you to share an internet connection with more than one computer by setting up a Local Area Network (LAN). In these situations, specific ports may have to be forwarded to specific computers on that LAN to allow programs to work as intended.

Instructions

    • 1

Go to the computer that you need to forward a port to. Open a command prompt by clicking on "Start," "All Programs," "Accessories" and then clicking on "Command Prompt."

    • 2

Type "ipconfig" into the command prompt and write down the IP address of the computer.

    • 3

Open a web browser and navigate to "192.168.1.1" which is the default address of many Linksys routers. Enter your username and password to login. If you don't know your username and password or the default address doesn't work, consult your router's manual or the person who set up the network.

    • 4

Click on the "Applications and Gaming" tab and then click on "Port Range Forward."

    • 5

Enter the port range you wish to forward along with the IP address that you noted in Step 2. Click on the "Enable" checkbox and then click on "Save Settings." The ports you specified are now forwarded to the computer that you specified.
