How to Look Up Information on MLS Listings
Multiple Listing Services (MLS) are used by real estate agents and brokerages all over the United States to catalogue homes for sale in a certain geographic area. Real Estate ABC states that the MLS system acts as a huge database for information on listed, pending and sold homes. The United States does not have one large MLS, but rather larger cities and other geographical areas operate their own MLS specific to that city or geographical area. The MLS system stores all kinds of information including home data, photos and marketing trends. Finding MLS information can be done in several ways.

1
Talk to a real estate agent. Local real estate agents in your area have direct access to that area's MLS listings and can easily search for information for you. Alexandria real estate agent Susan Craft explains in her real estate blog that because agents have direct 24/7 access to the MLS system, they are the best source for MLS information, especially brand new information. Real estate agents often also have access to private MLS information, such as foreclosure and short sale details.

Check Realtor.com. Operated by the National Association of Realtors, Realtor.com compiles all the city and geographical MLS systems into one home search engine. According to Realtor.com, you can search by area, price and other criteria to find a MLS number, or if you know the MLS number, you can perform a direct MLS number search to pull up information on that property.

Search real estate and brokerage websites. The websites of local real estate agents or real estate brokerages often include a MLS search for that area's MLS listings. For example, Indianapolis real estate agent Diane Brooks' website, HomesinIndy.com, gives users the option to search the Indianapolis-area MLS listings for information on homes for sale.
