How to Convert an AT&T Razr to T-Mobile

Unlocking your Motorola Razr will allow it to work on any network, including T-Mobile

Both AT&T and T-Mobile operate their networks using the Global System for Mobile Communication (GSM) standard. GSM is the standard on which most of the world's cellular phones operate. Because they are both GSM carriers, phones are interchangeable between the two carriers. However, unlike many global GSM carriers, both T-Mobile and AT&T lock their phones to their network. Unlike Nokia, Motorola does not offer a free unlock code calculator. By buying a code and entering it into your AT&T Razr, you will be able to use the phone on any world GSM network, including T-Mobile and AT&T in the United States.

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase an unlock code from one of the many online retailers who can calculate the code for you. This will require you to look up your phone's IMEI number. To look up the IMEI number, make sure the battery is in your phone, turn it on and key in *#06#. The first 15 digits that your phone displays make up its IMEI number. Write this number down. It will be required for the purchase process for your unlock code.

    • 2

Put the T-Mobile SIM card in your Razr. This card will not allow network access, but is needed as part of the unlock process. To install the card, remove the battery cover and battery. The SIM card is at the bottom of the battery compartment. If a SIM card is already in the phone, remove it by sliding it up and slipping the T-Mobile SIM card in its place.

Enter the unlock code, or subsidy code, into the phone and press the "OK" button, which is the rightmost soft key on the phone.

Tips & Warnings

  • Most sites selling unlock codes for your Razr will ask you to look up your IMEI again. It is not a bad idea to follow their process to verify your IMEI. The code they provide will be unique to your specific phone. If one digit of the IMEI is off, the unlock code will not work on your phone.
