OpenOffice is an open-source productivity suite consisting of a collection of business applications, similar to applications available in the Microsoft Office suite. Open-Office is free to download and install from OpenOffice.org. The office suite is distributed by Sun Microsystems, and you can also download it with the Sun Java download package, if desired. The OpenOffice package is a cross-platform application suite, meaning that versions of the package will run on any operating system. The application suite is also compatible with, and will read and edit Microsoft Office documents. As with other documents, OpenOffice forms may be configured to be read-only. Changing this read-only attribute is straightforward using file property functions in Windows Explorer.

Instructions

    • 1

Click the Windows “Start” button and select “Explore” from the context menu. Windows Explorer will open.

    • 2

Navigate to the read-only OpenOffice form to update.

    • 3

Right-click on the read-only OpenOffice form.

    • 4

Select “Properties” from the context menu.

    • 5

Uncheck the “Read-Only” option at the bottom of the Properties window in the Attributes section. Click "Apply" then "OK."

    • 6

      Click “OK”.

    • 7

Test the document by opening in a compatible application, editing the document and resaving. If the changes are captured when the edited version of the document is saved, you successfully turned off the read-only attribute.
