How to Crochet a Child's Hat

How to Crochet a Child's Hat thumbnail
A crocheted hat will keep your kids warm.

Crocheting a child's hat is an excellent way to use up leftover yarn and create a thoughtful gift for a child in your life. A child's hat is simple to crochet, and you can personalize it with unique colors and yarn to make a fun accessory that the young recipient will enjoy wearing. An ideal beginner project, making hats is also a good way to teach both children and adults how to crochet. Make a child's hat to be durable and attractive using basic stitches such as double or single crochet.

Instructions

    • 1

Select yarn that is resistant to shrinking, pilling or stretching. Children's hats receive a great deal of rough wear and should consist of durable material. Acrylic, superwash wool and some cotton blends are ideal for crocheting a child's hat.

    • 2

Select a crochet hook one size smaller than you would normally use for the weight of yarn you are working with to ensure firm crochet stitches and a durable, sturdy hat.

    • 3

Measure the child's head to determine the size of hat needed.

    • 4

Crochet a swatch, and measure your gauge to determine the number of stitches per inch you are crocheting using the yarn and hook you have chosen. Multiply your stitches per inch by the hat measurement. For instance, if the hat needs to be 10 inches in circumference, and your gauge is 4 stitches per inch, you will need 10 times 4, or 40 stitches to achieve the correct size.

    • 5

Chain the number of stitches you need, plus three if you are working in double crochet, or two if you are working in single crochet, and join, using the extra two or three chains as your first stitch.

    • 6

Work continuously in the round, not joining rounds, until you reach the crown of the hat.

    • 7

Decrease gradually as you work the crown, continuing in rounds, until only a few stitches remain. Draw the working yarn through the remaining stitches and fasten off. Complete the hat with pom-poms or embellishments if desired, that is appropriate for the age of the child.
