How to Reduce Image Size in Gimp

The GNU Image Manipulation Program (GIMP) is a free graphics editor. Some things you can do with GIMP include cropping images, adding text to photos and changing the size of an image. If you want to use GIMP to reduce the size of an image, it takes little time to do so.

Instructions

    • 1

Open GIMP and then open the image you want to modify. The picture will open in a new window.

    • 2

Look to the menu bar located at the top of the image window and click "Image." You can make many changes to an image here, such as merging layers, changing the position of the image and changing the size of the image.

    • 3

Select "Scale Image" from the list that drops down. The "Scale Window" options will open in a new window.

    • 4

Enter the width and height you want to reduce the image to. Click the arrow next to "pixels" if you want to reduce the image size by percentage or inches instead of pixels. You can also use your mouse to hold down the down arrow next to the image size to make the image smaller.

    • 5

Click "Scale" to save the changes you made. The image will now be reduced. If you didn't make it small enough, open "Scale Image" again and make the size smaller.
