How to Know a Legitimate Website

Some websites are infected with computer viruses.

According to a 2007 survey by Netcraft, there are over 108 million distinct websites on the Internet. There is no way to be absolutely certain which are legitimate (i.e. free of security risks) and which are not. However, one free online tool gives you a fighting chance by visiting and testing thousands of sites thousands of times per day in an effort to determine which are legitimate and which are not.

Instructions

    • 1

Go to the McAfee SiteAdvisor homepage.

    • 2

      Click on "Free Download."

    • 3

Click on the appropriate link (Windows or Mac).

    • 4

Click on "Download SiteAdvisor Software" and wait for the file to download.

    • 5

      Restart your web browser.

    • 6

Try a search using your favorite search engine. You will notice that there is now a colored icon next to each search result. A green icon indicates that the site is safe. A yellow icon indicates the site has a minor risk issue. A red icon means it has a serious risk issue. To learn more about how legitimate the site is, click on the colored icon.
