Painting stemware is a decorative craft project that anyone can do with the right material and a few tips. The biggest obstacle artistically challenged people face with painting stemware is how to transfer a design onto the glass. Not everyone can create a painted design by freehand. Fortunately, there is more than one way to tackle this obstacle so that even the least talented artist can create beautiful, hand-painted stemware.

Instructions

    • 1

Tape a stencil onto the outside of the glass. Using glass paint and an almost dry stencil brush, swirl the paint over the design cutout. Swirl the paint from the inside edge of the stencil to the center of the cutout design. Carefully remove the stencil from the glass and allow the paint to dry. Glass paint transfers a translucent design onto the stemware; use enamel paint if you prefer an opaque design.

    • 2

Cut around the outline of a template. Tape the template to the outside of the glass stemware. Trace the outline of the template onto the glass with a grease pencil. After filling in the design with glass or enamel paint, you can wash away the grease pencil outline.

    • 3

Tape a small image, a template cutout or a stencil onto the inside of the glass stemware. Transfer the outline of the design onto the outside of the glass stemware with a glass paint pen. If you are using a stencil, transfer the design by filling in the cutout areas with glass paint as if you were coloring in a coloring book.

    • 4

Create a stained glass effect onto the outside of stemware by tracing the design outline with self-adhesive leading strips. Squirt stained glass paint between the lines to transfer the design with color.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use any of these techniques to transfer a design onto a glass vase, plate or other glass object that you wish to paint or decorate. If you prefer a 3-D design, fill in between the painted outlines with glass microbeads. Jeweler's glue works to attach the colorful beads to the glass.
