How to Send a Letter to a Famous Person

Sending a letter in the mail can be a very gratifying experience.

Most people have someone famous they look up to or idolize. This person may be a sports star, television celebrity or someone else who has accomplished great things. Sending a letter to a famous person is simple to do using basic writing supplies and the proper information. Famous people lead very busy lives and often find it difficult to read fan mail, much less write back. Send your letter with the intention of not receiving anything and you may end up being pleasantly surprised if you do.

1. 

   The internet is a great resource for celebrity addresses.

   Use your computer and internet service to locate the address of the famous person you are writing. It's important to do this first so you don't spend time writing a letter to someone whose address you are unable to locate. Often you will be able to write a famous person in care of an agent or publishing house. For Hollywood stars, you look them up on the MailHollywood.com website.

2. 

   A letter tells a lot about the writer.

   Begin your letter with a salutation. A salutation begins with "Dear Mr. So-and-So," or "Dear Ms. Doe,". Show respect for the famous person you're writing to by addressing them as Mr. or Mrs. Avoid starting your letter off with a salutation of "Hey" or "Hello." This does not make a very good first impression for you.

3. Write the body of your letter. Express what it is you admire about the famous person and why you've chosen to write them. If they are someone you aspire to be like, tell them what your goals and plans are and how they have inspired you. Each paragraph should include at least three sentences. Your letter can be as short or long as you like, but be considerate of the celebrity's time.

4. 

   Write your signature so the reader can read it.

   Close your letter in a professional and polite manner by signing off with:

   Be sure to use the appropriate postage.

   Fold your letter into thirds and place it in your envelope. Seal the envelope and place appropriate postage in the upper-right-hand corner.

6. Write your mailing address in the upper-left-hand corner of the envelope. Add the address of the famous person you're writing to in the center of the envelope.

• Insufficient postage will result in your letter not being delivered. If your letter is extra thick, take it to the post office to ensure they put the proper postage on your letter.
