Purchasing a used Dell computer can be an exciting event--until you get the computer home and realize that it is password-protected. Circumventing this password can be done by resetting the BIOS in your Dell system, allowing you to eliminate the password and gain access to your new system. This can generally be done in around 10 minutes.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the computer and unplug it.

    • 2

Remove the screws at the back of the case, and remove the side panel.

    • 3

Look on the motherboard for the password reset jumper, which is normally located on the bottom half of the system. Consult your operating manual for the exact location on your specific model.

    • 4

Remove the jumper from the first two pins by using your fingers.

Place the jumper over pins two and three. Wait five to 10 seconds, and replace the jumper over pins one and two. This will reset the password.
