Instructions

Accentuate the waist in your dress design. A corset is an ideal way to accent the smallest part of a woman's body, her waist, and tighten up her body lines. Further accent this midpoint and enhance her hour glass shape with an accent. A beaded, sparkling or floral applique will do the trick. For a modern touch, wrap a colorful sash or belt around the waist of the dress.

Design a skirt that floats away from the body. A-lines are the classic and most uniformly flattering skirt styles, since it flairs away from the waist in an "A" shape. A more unconventional skirt option would be a trumpet or modified trumpet skirt, which accentuates a woman's curves. This design has a dropped waist and the skirt flairs out from around the knees.

Add a sweetheart neckline to soften the bust line of the dress and also mimic the curves her body naturally has. A straight across neckline will be to harsh and make her appear boxy. Be sure the sweetheart is subtle because you don't want too much of a plunging line or else the cleavage will lose the soft effect.

Choose fabric that compliments the body shape. More expensive fabrics like chiffon, silk or satin will help camouflauge any imperfections, while cheaper fabrics like polyester may cling to the body in unflattering ways. The more layers of fabric the better because they will also help disguise any flaws.

Tips & Warnings

  • Avoid turning the A-line skirt into a ballgown because this will add more bulk to the dress and likewise the woman wearing it.

  • Stick to clean lines.

  • Ruching, a layering technique with fabric, can help disguise imperfections.

  • Avoid any busy embroidery or patterns as this will also make the dress appear heavy.
