How to Start Your Own Small Business in the State of Missouri

Register the business name with the Secretary of State. Registering a business name has specific procedures depending on the type of business structure. A sole proprietor partnership company requires a fictitious business name. Corporations and limited liability companies (LLC) file articles of incorporation.

Get a local business license. This can often be obtained through a city or county clerk in Missouri.

Missouri requires a sales tax number so that you can collect sales tax on applicable goods. If you do not sell goods that are taxable, or you are a wholesale only business, you can apply for a sales tax exemption. The Missouri Department of Revenue handles sales tax issues.

Obtain a EIN (federal identification number)if required by your business structure. Certain corporations and LLCs require an EIN number. This number is obtained directly from the IRS, through form SS-4.

A business plan is not required to register a business, but it is recommended. A business plan will allow you to write down your business idea and plan out short and long term goals.
