Double Rake Knitting Loom Instructions

Double Rake Knitting Loom Instructions thumbnail
Knit with a double rake knitting loom.

Knitters who knit on a loom enjoy all of the stitch varieties of traditional knitting with the ease of knitting that the loom provides. When you knit on a loom, you hold the loom in one hand and wrap the yarn around the pegs with the other hand. While a round knitting loom may be the most common loom, another loom that some knitters enjoy is the double rake loom. A double rake loom is an oblong loom with a double row of straight pegs, enabling the knitter to knit in a double layer to create different knitted items.

Instructions

    • 1

Pull the end of the yarn from the skein and wrap it around the end peg on the left side of the loom (sticking out from the end of the loom) tightly three times. Extend the yarn directly over to the lower left peg and wrap it around once from right to left.

    • 2

Extend the yarn up to the upper left peg and wrap it around once. Pull the yarn over to the next lower peg and wrap it around once. Extend the yarn up to the upper peg directly above and wrap it around once.

    • 3

Repeat the wrapping technique to create a foundation for your knitting project. Use all the pegs in the knitting loom or stop anywhere along the loom if you want to make a narrower project. If you make your foundation narrower, stop after wrapping both an upper and lower peg.

    • 4

Work back to the end you started wrapping by reversing the wrapping technique to place two wrapped yarn loops on every peg. When you reach the end of the loom again, wrap the yarn around the end peg to anchor the yarn.

    • 5

Knit the yarn on the pegs. Use the knitting tool to hook each lower loop and pull them over the upper loops and off the pegs. It doesn't matter what order you knit the pegs.

    • 6

Unwrap the anchored yarn and wrap the pegs again using the same technique. Wrap the yarn around the pegs until you reach the other side of the loom. Hold the yarn in place at this side with the hand that holds the loom while you knit these pegs.

    • 7

Knit the pegs again with the knitting tool. After you finish knitting the pegs, take the working yarn (from the right side of the loom this time) and wrap it around the loops working from right to left until you reach the left end of the loom.

    • 8

Knit the pegs again and then wrap the loops again. Continue this process until your project is as long as you desire.

    • 9

Bind off by removing the single loop from the upper left peg and then the lower left peg and placing them onto the knitting tool. Move the first loop over the second loop and tighten. Remove the loop from the next upper peg (two loops on the tool again) and move the first loop over the second loop again and tighten. Remove the loop from the next lower peg (two loops on the tool again) and move the first loop over the second loop. Continue this process until you reach the other end of the knitting and only one loop remains.

    • 10

Remove the knitting from the loom. Cut the yarn off so 5 inches of tail remains. Weave the tail through the knitting to reach the ending loop and tuck the tail through this loop tightly. Weave the end of the tail through the knitting several more times, then cut the excess tail off to finish.
