How to Use a Sheaffer Fountain Pen

How to Use a Sheaffer Fountain Pen thumbnail
There are a number of ways to properly fill fountain pens.

The Sheaffer Pen company was established in 1912 with an innovative filling system that set it apart from other pen producers of the time. The pen's filling system works on a down stroke of the lever within the pen, while others fill on the upstroke. For those who are used to other types of fountain pens, this different filling system may prove confusing; proper patience and technique can help you ensure proper filling and use of your Sheaffer pen.

Instructions

    • 1

Open your ink bottle and place it on a paper towel or other absorbent surface in case the ink drips during filling.

    • 2

Unscrew the back of the pen to reveal the plunger. Hold the pen over the paper towel and depress the plunger to remove any excess ink and air. Slowly raise the plunger as far as it will go.

    • 3

Submerge the tip of the pen fully into the bottle, so that the nib and the area directly behind the nib are completely covered in ink.

    • 4

Press the plunger quickly and firmly back into the pen. Hold the pen in this position for at least a minute while the pen fills.

    • 5

Pull the pen out of the ink and wipe the nib on the paper towel to avoid any clogging in the nib. Then repeat Steps 3 and 4 to make sure the pen is completely full.

    • 6

Put the pen back together, screwing all parts together firmly.

    • 7

Test-write with the fountain pen to make sure there are no clogs. Hold the pen over your paper and gently press with the nib; write your name or another word to test it. If the pen glides and ink flows well, you are ready to continue using the pen.

Tips & Warnings

  • When writing with a Sheaffer fountain pen, do not push as hard as you would with a traditional ballpoint pen; too much pressure can damage the nib of the pen.
